Knee length dresses or one can say cocktail dresses are generally worn by women when go to attend semi formal parties or cocktail parties.
The length of the dress generally varies according to the local custom or fashion. The measurement ranges from ankle to knee length dresses. When the gown is 2 inches above the ankle it is known as or called tea length and when the dress reaches the ankle, it is called ballerina. Generally the ballerina length falls into the category of the evening gowns.
As mentioned earlier, the knee length dresses are worn for semi formal occasions or one can even say for black tie parties. Before the mid 20th century, these types of knee length dresses were known as late afternoon dresses. In 1980s the knee length dresses or cocktail dresses were not known for its length, but for its level of extravagance.
In the late 1940s Christian Dior was the first designer to use the term cocktail dress for knee length dresses.
They also described it as early evening wear for women. It labeled its first collection of knee length dresses as cocktail dresses for its spring collection in 1955.
Christian Dior also introduced the concept of A line dresses in the knee length dresses range which was liked by most of the top class women in Paris. Even though the A line shape was not identical to what the idea of A line knee length dresses in today’s time, the concept did come from the pioneers of Dior’s. One can even say that the concept became popular for the simple publicity of the designers.
The concept of A-line knee length dresses remained popular in the 1960s and 1970s. But in the early 1980s the concept of A-line dresses completely disappeared. In the late 1990s the concept came back because of the retro trend in the market which all women started liking.
It was also a fact that all women realized that the A line skirts gave no comfort to the person wearing the same. The skirts have pleats or slits in them and it fitted on the upper hip of the individual wearing it. It was difficult to see the fastening of the same because it was kept discreet. Many designers used belts for the same. Usually the skirts did not have pockets. The length of the skirts varied from mini and below knee length dresses.
As the name suggests, one can absolutely imagine what the look of the knee length dresses be. Normally the knee length dress is a slightly longer than a mini or short length dress. But the knee length dresses are shorter that the tea length dresses.
